    Carolina Jasmine (Gelsemium sempervirens)
    • Botanical Name: Gelsemium sempervirens. This evergreen twining vine belongs to the Gelsemiaceae family and is native to the southeastern United States and parts of Central America.
    • Common Names: Carolina Jasmine, Carolina Jessamine, Yellow Jessamine, False Jasmine. It is the state flower of South Carolina and prized for its fragrant, trumpet-shaped yellow blooms that appear in late winter to early spring.
Best Growing Environment: Carolina Jasmine thrives in moist, organically rich, well-drained soils with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (ideally 5.5–7.0). It performs best in full sun for maximum flowering and dense foliage, though it tolerates partial shade. The vine adapts to various conditions, including heat, humidity, and occasional drought once established, making it suitable for fences, trellises, arbors, or as a sprawling groundcover. It prefers protection from harsh winds and benefits from mulch to keep roots cool and moist.
    • Average Height and Diameter (Spread): As a climbing vine, it typically reaches 10–20 feet in height (sometimes up to 25–30 feet with support). Spread is generally 3–6 feet wide, though it can sprawl more extensively as a groundcover.
    • Growth Rate: Moderate to fast once established. Young plants grow modestly in the first season but can add 3–5 feet per year under ideal conditions, quickly covering structures within 3–4 seasons.
    • Sun Requirements: Full sun (6+ hours of direct sunlight daily) promotes the most prolific blooms and compact growth. It tolerates light to partial shade but may produce fewer flowers and more leggy stems in deeper shade.
    • Cold Hardiness: Reliable in USDA Zones 7–10, with some cultivars extending to Zone 6. It withstands temperatures down to about 0F to 10F but may show semi-evergreen tendencies or minor leaf drop in colder northern edges of its range. It is heat-tolerant and performs well in southern climates.
    • Water Requirements: Medium moisture is ideal. Provide consistent watering to establish new plants, keeping soil evenly moist (but not soggy) during the first growing season. Mature vines are drought-tolerant and handle dry spells well, though supplemental deep watering during prolonged drought encourages better growth and blooming. Avoid overwatering to prevent root rot.
    • Detailed Fertilizing Guide: Fertilize sparingly as this vine is not a heavy feeder. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer (such as 10-10-10 or 12-6-6) in early spring as new growth begins. A second light application in early summer can support continued vigor. Alternatively, use rose food or a 2–3 inch layer of organic compost/leaf mold around the base 2–3 times during the growing season. Cease fertilizing several weeks before the first frost to avoid encouraging tender growth. Over-fertilizing can reduce flowering.
    • Planting Guide: Plant in spring or fall for best root establishment. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and slightly shallower. Set the plant so the top of the root ball sits at or slightly above soil level. Backfill with amended native soil mixed with compost for richness and drainage. Water thoroughly after planting and apply mulch. Provide a sturdy support (trellis, fence, or arbor) immediately and tie young stems as needed. Space plants 4–8 feet apart depending on use (closer for groundcover). Water regularly until established.
    • USDA Zone: Primarily Zones 7–10, with good performance extending into parts of Zone 6 in protected microclimates.
This beautiful, low-maintenance native vine offers year-round glossy foliage and a spectacular early-season floral display, attracting pollinators while requiring minimal care once settled in the right spot.
